Here is no Rest

Here o'er the earth as a stranger I roam,

1

Millennial Harp (1843), Supplement («SUPPLEMENT TO THE HARP.»), printed p. 12 (PDF 304); the whole hymn is
on this page (music, then stanzas 2–4 as verse). Two staves (treble with two voices on one stem and the words
printed under it; bass); G major, 4/4. «Fine.» over the end of the first strain and «D. C.» at the end.

2

Each stanza has five lines, sung in this order: lines 1–2 on the first strain (sung twice), lines 3–4 on the
second strain (sung twice), line 5 on the first strain again after the D. C., ending at «Fine.». The first
stanza prints its lines 1–2 braced under the treble, its lines 3–4 braced under the treble after the repeat
sign, and its line 5 («My heart doth leap…») under the bass staff. Stanza 1 is numbered «1.»; stanzas 2–4
are numbered «2», «3», «4» on their own lines above them.

Here o'er the earth as a stranger I roam, Here is no rest, is no rest ;
Here as a pilgrim I wander alone, Yet I am blest, I am blest.
For I look forward to that glorious day,
When sin and sorrow will vanish away.
My heart doth leap while I hear Jesus say,There,there is rest, there is rest.

2
Here fierce temptations beset me around ; Here is no rest—is no rest :
Here I am grieved while my foes me surround ; Yet I am blest—I am blest.
Let them revile me and scoff at my name,
Laugh at my weeping—endeavor to shame ;
I will go forward, for this is my theme ; There, there is rest—there is rest.

3
Here are afflictions and trials severe ; Here is no rest—is no rest ;
Here I must part with the friends I hold dear ; Yet I am blest—I am blest.
Sweet is the promise I read in his word ;
Blessed are they who have died in the Lord ;
They will be call'd to receive their reward ;—Then there is rest—there is rest.

4
This world of cares is a wilderness state, Here is no rest—is no rest ;
Here I must bear from the world all its hate,—Yet I am blest—I am blest.
Soon shall I be from the wicked released,
Soon shall the weary forever be blest,
Soon shall I lean upon Jesus' breast—Then there is rest—there is rest.
