⤢ Full screenHow pleasant, how divinely fair,
O Lord of hosts, thy dwellings are!
With long desire my spirit faints
To meet th' assemblies of thy saints.
I long to rest in thine abode,
My panting heart cries out for God;
My God, my King, why should I be
So far from all my joys and thee?
Blest are the souls that find a place
Within the temple of thy grace;
There they behold thy gentle rays,
And seek thy face and learn thy praise.
Blest are the men whose hearts are set
To find the way to Zion's gate:
God is their strength; and through the road
They lean upon their helper, God.
Cheerful they walk, with growing strength,
Till all shall meet in heaven at length;
Till all before thy face appear,
And join in nobler worship there.
About this hymn
As printed Header as printed: «3 BURTON. L. M. Isaac B. Woodbury.» Stanza 1 is set between the staves (numbered «1.»); stanzas 2–5 follow as text in the left column below the music, under the cross-reference line «136, 101, 104.» (= the same words may be sung to the tunes of hymns 136, 101 or 104), and end with «Isaac Watts.» in italics. The period's thin space before «;», «?» and «:» is not reproduced (parent normalisation, same convention as the other hymnals).
