Worship — Attributes and Providence of God

Eternal Power, whose high abode

  • No. 50
  • Words Isaac Watts.
  • 3 stanzas
  • Words only in the original
1

Eternal Power, whose high abode
Becomes the grandeur of a God,
Infinite lengths beyond the bounds
Where stars revolve their little rounds!

2

Earth, from afar, hath heard thy fame,
And worms have learned to lisp thy name;
But O! the glories of thy mind
Leave all our soaring thoughts behind.

3

God is in heaven, and men below;
Be short our tunes, our words be few;
A solemn reverence checks our songs,
And praise sits silent on our tongues.

About this hymn

As printed Words only. As printed: hymn number «50», reference line «136, 54, 51.» in italics (sing to the tune of hymn 136, 54 or 51), three numbered stanzas at the foot of the right column of p. 20, «Isaac Watts.» in italics at the end. The first word «ETERNAL» is set in small capitals. The print sets a thin space before «;» and «!» («rounds !», «name ;», «O !», «few ;»); it is closed up here. Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's. The lines of each stanza are set flush (no indentation). No meter is printed (the text is L. M., 8.8.8.8, in couplets). The hymn ends on this page.
