Words
⤢ Full screenThe spacious firmament on high,
With all the blue, ethereal sky,
And spangled heavens, a shining frame,
Their great Original proclaim:
Th' unwearied sun, from day to day
Does his Creator's power display,
And publishes to every land
The work of an almighty hand.
Soon as the evening shades prevail,
The moon takes up the wondrous tale;
And nightly, to the listening earth
Repeats the story of her birth;
While all the stars that round her burn,
And all the planets in their turn,
Confirm the tidings as they roll,
And spread the truth from pole to pole.
What though in solemn silence, all
Move round the dark terrestrial ball?
What though no real voice nor sound
Amid their radiant orbs be found?
In reason's ear they all rejoice,
And utter forth a glorious voice,
Forever singing as they shine,
"The hand that made us is divine."
About this hymn
As printed As printed: hymn number «68», tune name «CREATION. L. M. D.» centred over the music («D.» in a small capital), «Francis J. Haydn.» at the right (capitals and small capitals); running head «WORSHIP—ATTRIBUTES AND PROVIDENCE OF GOD.». No reference line (the hymn has its own tune). Stanza 1 is interlinear: the first system is printed with a repeat sign and carries two lines of words, bracketed «1. { The spacious … sky, / And spangled … proclaim: }» (first and second time through the system; «heavens,» set in a condensed type); the second and third systems carry one line each. Stanzas 2–3 are printed as text in the left column below the music, «Joseph Addison.» in italics after stanza 3. The print sets a thin space before «;», «:» and «?» («proclaim :», «tale ;», «birth ;», «ball ?», «found ?»); it is closed up here. Printed curly quotes are written straight. Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's. The eight lines of each stanza are printed flush, without indentation.
