Words
⤢ Full screenI sing the mighty power of God,
That made the mountains rise,
That spread the flowing seas abroad,
And built the lofty skies;
I sing the wisdom that ordained
The sun to rule the day;
The moon shines full at his command,
And all the stars obey.
I sing the goodness of the Lord,
That filled the earth with food;
He formed the creatures with his word,
And then pronounced them good.
Lord, how thy wonders are displayed
Where'er I turn my eye!
If I survey the ground I tread,
Or gaze upon the sky!
There's not a plant or flower below
But makes thy glories known;
And clouds arise, and tempests blow,
By order from thy throne.
Creatures that borrow life from thee
Are subject to thy care;
There 's not a place where we can flee
But God is present there.
About this hymn
As printed As printed: hymn number «83», tune name «VARINA. C. M. D.» centred over the music (the «D.» in small capitals), «George F. Root.» at the right (capitals and small capitals); running head «WORSHIP—ATTRIBUTES AND PROVIDENCE OF GOD.». Stanza 1 is interlinear, between the staves, one line per system, with «1.» before «I»; its eight verse lines are given here as poetry. Stanzas 2–3 are printed as text in the left column below the music, under the reference line «486, 484, 450.» in italics (= may also be sung to the tunes of hymns 486, 484 or 450), with the stanza numbers printed without a full stop («2 I sing»), numbered «2.» here like stanza 1. «Isaac Watts.» in italics after stanza 3. The print sets a thin space before «;» and «!» («food ;», «eye !», «sky !», «known ;», «care ;», «day ;»); it is closed up here. «There's» (stanza 3, line 1) is printed closed, «There 's» (stanza 3, line 7) with a space before the apostrophe, and both are kept so. Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's. Lines 2, 4, 6 and 8 of the text stanzas are indented in the print.
