⤢ Full screenHow tender is thy hand,
O thou most gracious God!
Afflictions come at thy command,
And leave us at thy word.
How gentle is the rod
That chastens us for sin!
How soon we find a smiling God
Where deep distress has been!
A Father's hand we feel,
A Father's love we know,
'Mid tears of penitence we kneel,
And find his promise true.
We tell him all our grief,
We think of Jesus' love;
A sense of pardon brings relief,
And bids our pains remove.
Now will we bless the Lord,
And in his strength confide;
Forever be his name adored,
For there is none beside.
About this hymn
As printed As printed: hymn number «89», tune name «DOVE. S. M.» centred over the music, «Unknown.» at the right (capitals and small capitals); running head «WORSHIP—ATTRIBUTES AND PROVIDENCE OF GOD.». Stanza 1 is interlinear, between the staves, one line per system, with «1.» before «How» («Af - flic-tions» with a tight hyphen in «flic-tions»; «command,» printed as one word under two notes). Stanzas 2–5 are printed as text in the left column below the music, under the reference line «151, 688, 403.» in italics (= may also be sung to the tunes of hymns 151, 688 or 403). «Thomas Hastings.» in italics after stanza 5. The print sets a thin space before «!» and «;» («God !», «sin !», «been !», «love ;», «confide ;»); it is closed up here. The apostrophe of «'Mid» hangs into the left margin, as printed; it is written straight. Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's. Lines 2 and 4 of each stanza are indented in the print.
