⤢ Full screenJesus, and shall it ever be,
A mortal man ashamed of thee?
Ashamed of thee, whom angels praise,
Whose glories shine through endless days?
Ashamed of Jesus! sooner far
Let evening blush to own a star;
He sheds the beams of light divine
O'er this benighted soul of mine.
Ashamed of Jesus! just as soon
Let midnight be ashamed of noon;
'Twas midnight with my soul till he,
Bright Morning Star, bade darkness flee.
Ashamed of Jesus! that dear Friend
On whom my hopes of heaven depend!
No; when I blush, be this my shame
That I no more revere his name.
Ashamed of Jesus! yes, I may
When I've no guilt to wash away;
No tear to wipe, no good to crave,
No fears to quell, no soul to save.
Till then,—nor is my boasting vain,—
Till then I boast a Saviour slain;
And O, may this my glory be,
That Christ is not ashamed of me!
About this hymn
As printed As printed: running head «WORSHIP—ADORATION OF CHRIST.» (the first hymn of this section, 101–135); hymn number «101», tune name «FEDERAL STREET. L. M.» centred over the music, «Henry Kemble Oliver.» at the right (capitals and small capitals). Stanza 1 is interlinear, between the staves, one line per system, with «1.» before «Je-»; «ashamed», «Ashamed», «glories» and «endless» are printed there as whole words under two notes. Stanzas 2–6 are printed as text in the left column below the music, under the reference line «108, 58, 315.» in italics (= may also be sung to the tunes of hymns 108, 58 or 315). «Joseph Grigg.» in italics after stanza 6. The print sets a thin space before «!» and «;» («Jesus !», «star ;», «No ;»); it is closed up here. All four lines of each stanza are flush left in the print (no indentation). Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's. A former owner's handwriting on the page (notes above the running head, a stroke through «OF» and «L.», «Wrote when 16 yrs» beside the author line) is not part of the print and is not transcribed.
