⤢ Full screenO Thou in whose presence my soul takes delight,
On whom in affliction I call,
My comfort by day and my song in the night,
My hope, my salvation, my all!
Ye daughters of Zion, declare, have you seen
The star that on Israel shone?
Say if in your tents my Beloved has been,
And where with his flock he has gone.
His voice, as the sound of the dulcimer sweet,
Is heard through the shadows of death;
The cedars of Lebanon bow at his feet,
The air is perfumed with his breath.
His lips, as a fountain of righteousness flow,
To water the gardens of grace;
From which their salvation the Gentiles shall know,
And bask in the smiles of his face.
He looks, and ten thousands of angels rejoice,
And myriads wait for his word;
He speaks, and eternity, filled with his voice,
Re-echoes the praise of the Lord.
About this hymn
As printed As printed: hymn number «134», tune name «BELOVED. 11s & 8s.» centred over the music, «Freeman Lewis.» at the right (capitals and small capitals); running head «WORSHIP—ADORATION OF CHRIST.». Stanza 1 is interlinear, between the staves, one line per system, with «1.» before «O»; «presence», «delight,» and «comfort» are printed as whole words under two notes, «af - flic-tion» and «sal - va-tion,» hyphenated. Stanzas 2–5 are printed as text below the music (2–3 in the left column, 4–5 in the right column), without a tune-reference line and with the stanza numbers «2»–«5» without a period; «Joseph Swain.» in italics after stanza 5. The long lines are wrapped in the print («have you / seen», «dulcimer / sweet,», «Gentiles / shall know,», «angels / rejoice,», «with his / voice,»); they are joined here. The print sets a thin space before «?» and «;» («shone ?», «death ;», «grace ;», «word ;»); it is closed up here. An ink blot covers the «a» of «shall» (stanza 4); the word is «shall». Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's. Lines 2 and 4 of each stanza are indented in the print.
