⤢ Full screenCome, Holy Spirit, heav'nly Dove,
With all thy quickening powers;
Kindle a flame of sacred love
In these cold hearts of ours.
O raise our thoughts from things below,
From vanities and toys!
Then shall we with fresh courage go
To reach eternal joys.
Awake our souls to joyful songs;
Let pure devotions rise;
Till praise employs our thankful tongues,
And doubt forever dies.
Father, we would no longer live
At this poor, dying rate,
To thee our thankful love we give,
For thine to us is great.
Come, Holy Spirit, heavenly Dove,
With all thy quickening powers;
Come, shed abroad a Saviour's love,
And that shall kindle ours.
About this hymn
As printed As printed: running head «WORSHIP—HOLY SPIRIT.»; hymn number «144» (large), tune name «ST. MARTIN'S. C. M.» centred over the music, «William Tansur.» at the right (capitals and small capitals). Stanza 1 is interlinear, between the staves, one line per system, with «1.» before «Come,»; it reads «heav'n - ly» (with the apostrophe), while stanza 5 repeats the line as «heavenly». Stanzas 2–5 are printed as text in the left column below the music, under the reference line «27, 74, 147.» in italics (= may also be sung to the tunes of hymns 27, 74 or 147). «Isaac Watts.» in italics after stanza 5. Lines 2 and 4 of each text stanza are indented. The print sets a thin space before «;» and «!» («powers ;», «toys !», «songs ;», «rise ;»); it is closed up here. Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's.
