⤢ Full screenOur blest Redeemer, ere he breathed
His tender, last farewell,
A guide, a Comforter, bequeathed,
With us on earth to dwell.
He came in tongues of living flame,
To teach, convince, subdue;
All-powerful as the wind he came,
And all as viewless, too.
He comes sweet influence to impart,
A gracious, willing guest,
While he can find one humble heart
Wherein to fix his rest.
And his that gentle voice we hear,
Soft as the breath of even,
That checks each fault, calms every fear,
And whispers thoughts of heaven.
And every virtue we possess,
And every virtue won,
And every thought of holiness
Is his, and his alone.
About this hymn
As printed As printed: running head «WORSHIP—HOLY SPIRIT.»; hymn number «147» (large), tune name «BELMONT. C. M.» centred over the music, «Samuel Webbe.» at the right (capitals and small capitals). Stanza 1 is interlinear, between the staves, one line per system, with «1.» before «Our»; there «His» and «Comforter» are capitalised. Stanzas 2–5 are printed as text in the left column below the music, under the reference line «395, 7, 187.» in italics (= may also be sung to the tunes of hymns 395, 7 or 187); lines 2 and 4 of each stanza are indented. «Harriet Auber.» in italics after stanza 5. The print sets a thin space before «;» («subdue ;»); it is closed up here. Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's.
