⤢ Full screenSpirit of truth and love,
Life-giving holy Dove!
Speed forth thy flight;
Move o'er the waters' face,
Bearing the lamp of grace,
And in earth's darkest place
Let there be light!
Thou, whose almighty word
Chaos and darkness heard,
And took their flight,
Hear us, we humbly pray;
And where the gospel's day
Sheds not its glorious ray,
Let there be light!
Thou, who didst come to bring,
On thy redeeming wing,
Healing and sight,
Health to the sick and blind,
Sight to the darkened mind,
O now, to all mankind,
Let there be light!

As printed Words only. As printed: hymn number «156», reference line «34, 127.» in italics beside it (sing to the tune of hymn 34 or 127 — the 6s & 4s tunes AMERICA and ITALY; NEW HAVEN, hymn 155, is on the same page), stanza 1 at the foot of the left column of p. 56 below hymn 155, stanzas 2–3 at the top of the right column, «John Marriott,» in italics at the end (with a comma, as printed). The first word «SPIRIT» is set in capitals and small capitals. The print sets a thin space before «!» and «;» («Dove !», «flight ;», «light !», «pray ;»); it is closed up here.
