The starry firmament on high

  • No. 174
  • Words Robert Grant.
  • 4 stanzas
  • Words only in the original
1

The starry firmament on high,
And all the glories of the sky,
Yet shine not to thy praise, O Lord,
So brightly as thy written word.

2

The hopes that holy word supplies,
Its truths divine and precepts wise,
In each a heavenly beam I see,
And every beam conducts to thee.

3

Almighty Lord, the sun shall fail,
The moon her borrowed glory veil,
And deepest reverence hush on high
The joyful chorus of the sky:

4

But fixed for everlasting years,
Unmoved amid the wreck of spheres,
Thy word shall shine in cloudless day,
When heaven and earth have passed away

As printed Words only. As printed: hymn number «174» (large) with the reference line «168, 336, 51.» in italics beside it (sing to the tune of hymn 168, 336 or 51); the hymn stands in the lower half of the right column of p. 61, below hymn 173, stanzas 1–4, «Robert Grant.» in italics at the end. The first word «THE» is set in capitals and small capitals. The print sets a thin space before «:» («sky :»); it is closed up here. The last line «When heaven and earth have passed away» has no final stop in the print and is kept so. The lines of each stanza are set flush (not indented). Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's. No meter is printed (the text is L. M., 8.8.8.8).
