Words
⤢ Full screenA glory in the word we find
When grace restores our sight;
But sin has darkened all the mind,
And vailed the heavenly light.
When God's own Spirit clears our view,
How bright the doctrines shine!
Their holy fruits and sweetness show
The author is divine.
How blest are we, with open face
To view thy glory, Lord,
And all thy image here to trace,
Reflected in thy word!
O teach us, as we look, to grow
In holiness and love,
That we may long to see and know
Thy glorious face above.
About this hymn
As printed As printed: running head «WORSHIP—HOLY SCRIPTURES.»; hymn number «179» (large), tune name «ORTONVILLE. C. M.» centred over the music, «Thomas Hastings.» at the right (capitals and small capitals). Stanza 1 is interlinear, between the staves, one line per system, with «1.» before «A»; the music sings its last line twice («And vailed the heavenly light, And vailed the heavenly light.»), printed out in full under the staves — the stanza below gives the four verse lines once, as a poem, with the final reading «light.» (under the music line 4 ends first with «light,» and in the repeat with «light.»). Under the staves only «glo - ry» is hyphenated; «restores», «darkened» and «heavenly» are printed whole under two notes each, and «When grace», «darkened all» and «And vailed» are set with almost closed word spaces. Stanzas 2–4 are printed as text in the left column below the music, under the reference line «175, 117, 183.» in italics (= may also be sung to the tunes of hymns 175, 117 or 183). «Campbell's Collection.» in italics after stanza 4 (a source attribution, not a person's name). The print sets a thin space before «!» («shine !», «word !»); it is closed up here. The printer's curly apostrophe is written straight. Spelling («vailed»), punctuation and capitals are the print's. Lines 2 and 4 of each stanza are indented in the print.
