1

Lord of the Sabbath and its light,
I hail thy hallowed day of rest;
It is my weary soul's delight,
The solace of my care-worn breast.

2

O sacred day of peace and joy,
Thy hours are ever dear to me;
Ne'er may a sinful thought destroy
The holy calm I find in thee.

3

How sweetly now they glide along!
How hallowed is the calm they yield!
Transporting is their rapturous song,
And heavenly visions seem revealed.

4

O Jesus, let me ever hail
Thy presence with the day of rest;
Then will thy servant never fail
To deem thy Sabbath doubly blest.

About this hymn

As printed As printed: running head «WORSHIP—THE SABBATH.»; hymn number «212» (large), tune name «PARK STREET. L. M.» centred over the music, «FREDRICK M. A. VENNA.» at the right (capitals and small capitals; spelled so in the print, see uncertainties.md). Stanza 1 is interlinear, between the staves, one line per system, with «1.» before «Lord»; the music sings its last line twice («The sol-ace of my care-worn breast, The solace of my care-worn breast.»), printed out in full under the staves — the stanza below gives the four verse lines once, as a poem, with the final reading «breast.» (under the music line 4 ends first with «breast,» and in the repeat with «breast.»). Under the staves «Sab - bath», «wea-ry», «sol-ace» and «care-worn» are hyphenated, while «hallowed», «delight» and the repeated «solace» are printed whole under two notes each. Stanzas 2–4 are printed as text in the left column below the music, under the reference line «54, 47, 58.» in italics (= may also be sung to the tunes of hymns 54, 47 or 58). «Anon.» in italics after stanza 4. The print sets a thin space before «;» and «!» («rest ;», «me ;», «along !», «yield !»); it is closed up here. The printer's curly apostrophe is written straight. Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's. Lines 2 and 4 of each stanza are indented in the print.
