⤢ Full screenWith joy we hail the sacred day
Which God has called his own;
With joy the summons we obey,
To worship at his throne.
Thy chosen temple, Lord, how fair!
Where willing votaries throng
To breathe the humble, fervent prayer,
And pour the choral song.
Spirit of grace, O deign to dwell
Within thy church below;
Make her in holiness excel,
With pure devotion glow.
Let peace within her walls be found;
Let all her sons unite
To spread with grateful zeal around,
Her clear and shining light.
Then hail! thou sacred, blessed day,
The best of all the seven,
When hearts unite their vows to pay
Of gratitude to heaven.
About this hymn
As printed As printed: running head «WORSHIP—THE SABBATH.»; hymn number «227» (large), tune name «HERBERT. C. M.» centred over the music (condensed capitals and small capitals), «LOWELL MASON.» at the right (capitals and small capitals). Stanza 1 is interlinear, between the staves, one line per system, with «1.» before «With»; under the staves «sa - cred» and «wor-ship» / «wor - ship» are hyphenated, while «summons» and «obey,» are printed as unbroken words under two notes each. The music sings the last line twice («To wor-ship at his throne, To wor - ship at his throne.»), printed out in full under the second system — the stanza below gives the four verse lines once, as a poem, with the final reading «throne.». Stanzas 2–5 are printed as text in the left column below the music, under the reference line «70, 80, 147.» in italics (= may also be sung to the tunes of hymns 70, 80 or 147). «Henry F. Lyte.» in italics after stanza 5. The print sets a thin space before «;» and «!» («own ;», «fair !», «below ;», «found ;», «hail !»); it is closed up here. Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's. Lines 2 and 4 of each stanza are indented in the print.
