1

From the lips of angels spoken,
Fell the song with falling dews;
Was there ever silence broken
By such joyous welcome news?

Refrain

Chorus.
Hallelujah! hallelujah!
Hallelujah! Christ is born.

2

Startled shepherds, all awaking,
Hear the song the angels sing,
And their frightened flocks forsaking,
Go to seek the Saviour-king.

3

Son of God, in manger lowly,
Prince of light and Lord of love;
King of heaven, high and holy,
Boon on earth from courts above!

4

We exalt thee, we adore thee,
We rejoice, and praise thy name;
Every knee shall bend before thee,
Every tongue thy love proclaim.

About this hymn

As printed As printed: running head «CHRIST—FIRST ADVENT.»; hymn number «295» (large), tune name «REGENT SQUARE. 8s & 7s. 6l.» centred over the music (condensed capitals and small capitals), «HENRY SMART.» at the right (capitals and small capitals). Stanza 1 is interlinear, between the staves, one line per system, with «1.» before «From»; lines 1–4 are set as running words (only «si-lence» hyphenated), the chorus as «Hal - le - lu-jah! hal - le - lu-jah! Hal - le - lu- jah! Christ is born.». The word «Chorus.» is printed in bold above the treble staff at «Hal-» (m9): the last two lines of the 8s & 7s. 6l. stanza are the chorus. It is printed once; stanzas 2–4 (text below the music, four lines each, numbers without a period) are sung to the verse music and followed by the same chorus, which is not repeated in print. Under the music, centred in the left column, the reference line «162, 41, 92.» (other tunes for this text). «F. E. Belden.» in italics after stanza 4. The print sets a thin space before «;», «?» and «!» («dews ;», «news ?», «jah !», «love ;»); it is closed up here. «Boon on earth from courts above!» (stanza 3) is the print's reading. Spelling («Saviour-king»), punctuation and capitals are the print's.
