⤢ Full screenAngels, from the realms of glory,
Wing your flight o'er all the earth;
Ye who sang creation's story,
Now proclaim Messiah's birth.
Cho.—Come and worship, come and worship,
Worship Christ, the new-born King.
Shepherds in the field abiding,
Watching o'er your flocks by night,
God with man is now residing,
Yonder shines the infant light.
Sages, leave your contemplations,
Brighter visions beam afar;
Seek the great Desire of nations;
Ye have seen his natal star.
Saints, before the altar bending,
Watching long in hope and fear,
Suddenly the Lord, descending,
In his temple shall appear.
Sinners, wrung with true repentance,
Come with all your guilty stains;
Justice now revokes the sentence,
Mercy calls you,—break your chains.
About this hymn
As printed Words only. As printed: hymn number «297» (large) in the right column of p. 97, below hymn 296, with the reference line «277, 92, 41.» in bold italic figures on the same line (= sing to the tunes of hymns 277, 92 or 41). The first word «ANGELS» is set in capitals and small capitals. After stanza 1 a two-line refrain is printed once, headed «CHO.—» (capital C and small capitals, then a dash): «Come and worship, come and worship, / Worship Christ, the new-born King.»; it is not repeated after stanzas 2–5. «James Montgomery.» in italics after stanza 5. The print sets a thin space before «;» («earth ;», «afar ;», «nations ;», «stains ;»); it is closed up here. Apostrophes («o'er», «creation's», «Messiah's») are written straight. Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's. No meter is printed (the text is 8s & 7s with a two-line refrain).
