⤢ Full screenO sacred Head, once wounded,With grief and shame weighed down;Once scornfully surroundedWith thorns, thine only crown;O sacred Head, what glory,What bliss, till then was thine!Yet, though despised and gory,I joy to call thee mine.
What thou, my Lord, hast suffered,Was all for sinners' gain;Mine, mine was the transgression,But thine the deadly pain;Lo, here I fall, my Saviour!'T is I deserved thy place;Look on me with thy favor,Vouchsafe to me thy grace.
What language shall I borrowTo thank thee dearest Friend,For this, thy dying sorrow,Thy pity without end?Lord, make me thine forever,Nor let me faithless prove;O, let me never, neverAbuse such dying love!
About this hymn
As printed As printed: running head «CHRIST—SUFFERINGS AND DEATH.»; hymn number «330» (large), tune name «MEMORIAL. 7s & 6s. D.» centred over the music (condensed capitals and small capitals, «D.» in small capitals), «UNKNOWN.» at the right (capitals and small capitals). Stanza 1 is interlinear, between the staves, one long line per system (four verse lines each), with «1.» before «O»; the words are printed whole, without syllable hyphens, and set tight («Head, once», «bliss, till», «thine!Yet,though»). Stanzas 2–3 are printed as text in two columns below the music, under the reference line «492, 246, 415.» in bold italic figures (= may also be sung to the tunes of hymns 492, 246 or 415); lines 2, 4, 6 and 8 of each stanza are indented. «Paul Gerhardt.» in italics after stanza 3. The print sets a thin space before «;», «?» and «!» («gain ;», «pain ;», «place ;», «end ?», «prove ;»); it is closed up here. Stanza 3 line 2 has no comma after «thee» (a wide space only); it is kept so. The word «though» of stanza 1 (system 2) is read «though» — at 6× its fourth letter looks like this face's «n» (see uncertainties.md, item 12). The text stanzas are numbered «2», «3» without a period in the print; they are written «2.», «3.» here, as in the other deliveries of this book. Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's.
