1

When, marshaled on the nightly plain,The glittering host bestud the sky,One star alone of all the trainCan fix the sinner's wandering eye.

2

Once on the raging seas I rode; The storm was loud, the night was dark,The ocean yawned, and rudely blowedThe wind that tossed my foundering bark.

3

Deep horror then my vitals froze;Death-struck, I ceased the tide to stem; When suddenly a star arose,—It was the Star of Bethlehem.

4

It was my guide, my light, my all;It bade my dark forebodings cease; And through the storm and danger's thrallIt led me to the port of peace.

About this hymn

As printed As printed: running head «THE SINNER—CHRIST THE WAY OF LIFE.»; hymn number «365» (large), tune name «MISSIONARY CHANT. L. M.» centred over the music (capitals and small capitals), «HEINRICH C. ZEUNER.» at the right (capitals and small capitals). Stanza 1 is interlinear, between the staves, one line per system, with «1.» before «When,» (see `lyrics_syllables.txt`). Stanzas 2–4 are printed as text in the left column below the music, under the reference line «212, 336, 58.» in italics (= may also be sung to the tunes of hymns 212, 336 or 58); lines 2 and 4 of each stanza are indented. «Henry Kirke White.» in italics after stanza 4. The last word of stanza 2, «bark.», is turned onto a line of its own for want of room; it is joined to its verse here. The print sets a thin space before «;» («rode ;», «froze ;», «stem ;», «all ;», «cease ;»); it is closed up here. The printer's curly apostrophe is written straight («danger's»). The stanza numbers of the text column are printed without a period («2», «3», «4»); they are written «2.» … here, like the interlinear «1.», as in the other deliveries of this book. In stanza 4 line 4 the «o» of «of» is a broken letter (it prints like an «n»); it is the word «of». Spelling («marshaled», «blowed», «foundering»), punctuation and capitals are the print's.
