Strait is the way, the door is strait

  • No. 372
  • Words Isaac Watts.
  • 3 stanzas
  • Words only in the original
1

Strait is the way, the door is strait,That leads to joys on high;'T is but a few that find the gate,While thousands pass it by.

2

Belovèd self must be denied,The mind and will renewed,Passion suppressed, and patience tried,And vain desires subdued.

3

Lord! can a feeble, helpless wormFulfill a task so hard?Thy grace must all my work perform,And give the free reward.

About this hymn

As printed Words only. As printed: hymn number «372» (large) with the reference line «546, 395.» in italics beside it (sing to the tune of hymn 546 or 395), in the right column of p. 122 below the end of hymn 371 and «Isaac Watts.»; stanzas 1–3, then «Isaac Watts.» in italics. The first word «STRAIT» is set in capitals and small capitals; it is written «Strait» here. The stanza numbers are printed without a period («1» … «3»); they are written «1.» … here, as in the other deliveries of this book. «Belovèd» is printed with a grave accent on the e (sounded syllable), kept. The print sets a thin space before «;», «!» and «?» («high ;», «Lord !», «hard ?»); it is closed up here. The printer's curly apostrophe is written straight («'T is», with the space of the print). No meter is printed (the text is C. M., like the referenced tunes). Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's.
