⤢ Full screenCan sinners hope for heaven,Who love this world so well?Or dream of future happiness,While on the road to hell?
Shall they hosannas sing,With an unhallowed tongue?Shall palms adorn the guilty handWhich does its neighbor wrong?
Can sin's deceitful wayConduct to Zion's hill?Or those expect with God to reignWho disregard his will?
Thy grace, O God, alone,Good hopes can e'er afford:The pardoned and the pure shall seeThe glory of the Lord.
About this hymn
As printed Words only. As printed: hymn number «387» (large) with the reference line «236, 736, 558.» in italics beside it (sing to the tune of hymn 236, 736 or 558); the hymn stands in the lower half of the right column of p. 126, below hymn 386, and ends at the foot of that column with «Anon.» in italics. The first word «CAN» is set in capitals and small capitals. The print sets a thin space before «?» and «:» («well ?», «hell ?», «tongue ?», «wrong ?», «hill ?», «will ?», «afford :»); it is closed up here. The printer's curly apostrophes are written straight («sin's», «Zion's», «e'er»). Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's («neighbor», «unhallowed»). Lines 2 and 4 of each stanza are indented in the print. No meter is printed (the text is S. M., 6.6.8.6).
