The Sinner — Warning and Invitation

Come, humble sinner, in whose breast

  • No. 398
  • Words Edmund Jones.
  • 4 stanzas
  • Words only in the original
1

Come, humble sinner, in whose breastA thousand thoughts revolve,Come, with your guilt and fear oppressed,And make this last resolve:—

2

I 'll go to Jesus, though my sinsLike mountains round me close;I know his courts, I 'll enter in,Whatever may oppose.

3

Prostrate I 'll lie before his throne,And there my guilt confess;I 'll tell him, I 'm a wretch undoneWithout his sovereign grace.

4

Perhaps he will admit my plea,Perhaps will hear my prayer; But if I perish I will pray,And perish only there.

About this hymn

As printed Words only. As printed: hymn number «398» (large) with the reference line «581, 147.» in italics beside it (sing to the tune of hymn 581 or 147); the four stanzas stand in the right column of p. 129, below hymn 397 and «John Fawcett.», with «Edmund Jones.» in italics after stanza 4. The first word «COME» is set in capitals and small capitals; written in ordinary type here. The stanza numbers are printed without a period («1» … «4»); written «1.» … here as in the other deliveries of this book. The print sets a thin space before «;» and «:» («close ;», «confess ;», «prayer ;», «resolve :—»); it is closed up here. «I 'll» (stanzas 2 and 3, four times) and «I 'm» (stanza 3) are set with a gap between «I» and the apostrophe, and are written so, as in HT_0122, HT_0026, HT_0029 and HT_0098; the printer's curly apostrophes are written straight. Lines 2 and 4 of each stanza are indented in the print. No meter is printed (the text is C. M., 8.6.8.6, like the referenced tunes). Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's.
