⤢ Full screenJesus, Saviour of our race,Trusting in thy blood and grace,I, a sinner, wounded, sore,Prostrate fall, and help implore; On my back 's a burden high,—Sins of years that multiply;—In my heart a sense of wrongShades with sadness e'en my song.
Long I 've wandered round and round,Sought relief, but none have found; Now at last I come to thee,Save me, Lord; O, set me free!Yes, I hear the potent word;Yes, my earnest prayer is heard;Once in bondage, now I 'm free;Saved, dear Lord, and saved by thee!
From my back the burden rolled,—Burden high of sins untold;—From my heart all sense of shamePassed away when Jesus came.O what love in Christ I found!Love so high, so broad, profound;Love that I can never tell;Love that saved my soul from hell.
How shall I the debt repay,—Debt that swells from day to day?—How can I in words revealThat which in my heart I feel?Ah! my soul, it ne'er can be;Love divine 's too high for thee; What I owe to Christ to-dayWords or deeds can ne'er repay.
Bankrupt 'neath the cross I stand:Thus I sing,—O, sea! O, land —"In my hand no price I bring,Simply to thy cross I cling."Such a song my Lord approves,Sung by one the Spirit moves;Love is all he asks from me,That he has, most full, most free.
About this hymn
As printed As printed: running head «THE SINNER—REPENTANCE AND ACCEPTANCE.»; hymn number «464» (large), tune name «MARTYN. 7s. D.» centred over the music («D.» smaller), «SIMEON B. MARSH.» at the right (capitals and small capitals). Stanza 1 is set with the music in three places: under system 1, between the staves, two roman lines in braces after «1.» — lines 1–2 («Je - sus, Sav - iour of our race, Trust-ing in thy blood and grace,») and lines 3–4 («I, a sin - ner, wound-ed, sore, Pros-trate fall, and help im - plore;»), sung to system 1 and its repeat; under system 2, lines 5–6 («On my back 's a bur - den high,— Sins of years that mul - ti - ply;—»); and under the bass staff of system 1, in italics after «D. C.—», lines 7–8 («In my heart a sense of wrong Shades with sad - ness e'en my song.»), sung to system 1 after the D. C. Stanza 1 is given below in that order (lines 1–8). Stanzas 2–5 are printed as text in the left column under the italic reference line «828, 567.» (= the same words may be sung to the tunes of hymns 828 or 567); the last four lines of stanza 5 stand at the top of the right column, followed by «W. H. Littlejohn.» in italics. All lines of every stanza stand at the same margin (the opening quotation mark of stanza 5, line 3, hangs in the margin). The print sets a thin space before «;», «:», «!» and «?» («im - plore ;», «found ;», «free !», «stand :», «day ?—»); it is closed up here. A word space before the apostrophe is the print's and is kept: «back 's» (under system 2), «I 've», «I 'm» (stanza 2), «divine 's» (stanza 4); likewise the space before the dash in «O, land —» (stanza 5). Curly quotation marks and apostrophes are written straight. Spelling («Saviour», «to-day», «ne'er», «'neath»), punctuation (the dashes in «rolled,—», «untold;—», «repay,—», «day?—», «sing,—») and capitals are the print's.
