⤢ Full screenO Thou that hearest the prayer of faith,Wilt thou not save a soul from deathThat casts itself on thee?I have no refuge of my own,But fly to what my Lord hath done,And suffered once for me.
Slain in the guilty sinner's stead,His spotless righteousness I plead,And his availing blood:That righteousness my robe shall be,That merit shall atone for me,And bring me near to God.
Then save me from the second death,The Spirit of adoption breathe,His consolations send;By him some word of life impart,And sweetly whisper to my heart,"Thy Maker is thy friend."
Now, Lord, I would be thine alone;Come, take possession of thine own;For thou hast set me free:Released from Satan's hard command,See all my powers in waiting stand,To be employed by thee.
About this hymn
As printed Words only. As printed: hymn number «470» (large) at the head of the right column of p. 152, below the music of hymn 469, then in italics and square brackets «[Tune, Chardon. No: 235.]» (sing to the tune CHARDON, hymn 235), then «C. P. M.» in bold at the right (= common particular metre, 8.8.6.8.8.6). The mark after «No» reads at 6× as a colon (two dots), not the usual period; it is kept as printed in `tune_ref_as_printed`. The four stanzas follow in the right column, numbered «1»–«4» without periods (written «1.»–«4.» here, as in the other deliveries of this book); in each, lines 3 and 6 are indented (shown here by the indentation). The first word «O THOU» is set «O» + «THOU» in capitals and small capitals; written «O Thou». Stanza 3, line 2 is printed «TheSpirit» with no word space; written «The Spirit». «Augustus M. Toplady.» in italics at the end. The print sets a thin space before «?», «:» and «;» («thee ?», «blood :», «send ;», «alone ;», «own ;», «free :»); it is closed up here. The printer's curly apostrophes and quotation marks are written straight («sinner's», «Satan's», «"Thy Maker is thy friend."»). Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's.
