As the hart, with eager looks

  • No. 481
  • Words James Montgomery.
  • 3 stanzas
  • Words only in the original
1

As the hart, with eager looks,Panteth for the water-brooks,So my soul, athirst for thee,Pants the living God to see;

2

Why art thou cast down, my soul?God, thy God, shall make thee whole;Why art thou disquieted?God shall lift thy fallen head.

3

When, O, when, with filial fear,Lord, to thee my soul draws near,Let thy countenance benignBe the saving health of mine.

About this hymn

As printed Words only. As printed: hymn number «481» (large) in the left column of p. 155, under «George Burder.» of hymn 480 (DURHAM), with the italic reference line «720, 531, 272.» (= sing to the tunes of hymns 720, 531 or 272) beside the number; stanzas 1–3 in the left column, «James Montgomery.» in italics after stanza 3. The first word «AS» is set in capitals and small capitals. The lines of each stanza are not indented in the print. The print sets a thin space before «;» and «?» («see ;», «soul ?», «whole ;», «disquieted ?»); it is closed up here. No meter is printed (the text is 7s, like the three tunes referred to). Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's (stanza 1 ends with «;»; «water-brooks» is hyphenated inside the line).
