1

Thou coming One, our wants relieveIn this our evil day;To all thy tempted followers giveThe power to watch and pray.Long as our fiery trials last,Long as the cross we bear,O let our souls on thee be cast,In all-prevailing prayer.

2

The power of interceding graceGive us in faith to claim; To wrestle till we see thy face,And know thy hidden name.Till then thy perfect love impart;Till thou appear belowBe this the cry of every heart,—"I will not let thee go."

3

I will not let thee go, unlessThou tell thy name to me;With all thy great salvation bless,And make me all like thee. Then let me on the mountain-topBehold thy open face,Where faith in sight is swallowed up,And prayer in joyful praise.

About this hymn

As printed As printed: running head «THE CHRISTIAN—HYMNS FOR SOCIAL WORSHIP.»; hymn number «484» (large), tune name «PERSEVERANCE. C. M. D.» centred over the music (condensed capitals, the «D.» small), «UNKNOWN.» at the right (capitals and small capitals). Stanzas 2–3 are printed as text in two columns below the music; no reference line is printed for this hymn. «John Fawcett.» in italics after stanza 3. In the text stanzas, lines 2, 4, 6 and 8 are indented. The print sets a thin space before «;» («day ;», «claim ;», «impart ;», «me ;») and before the comma of «face ,» (stanza 3); it is closed up here. Pencil annotations of the exemplar on the page are not printed matter and are not transcribed. Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's.
