⤢ Full screenI love thee, I love thee, I love thee, my Lord;I love thee, my Saviour, I love thee, my God:I love thee, I love thee, and that thou dost know; But how much I love thee my actions will show.
I'm happy, I'm happy, O, wondrous account! My joys are immortal, I stand on the mount!I gaze on my treasure and long to be there,With Jesus and angels, and kindred so dear.
O Jesus, my Saviour, with thee I am blest,—My life and salvation, my joy and my rest:Thy name be my theme, and thy love be my song;Thy grace shall inspire both my heart and my tongue.
O, who's like my Saviour? he's Salem's bright King;He smiles, and he loves me, and helps me to sing:I'll praise him, I'll praise him, with notes loud and clear,While rivers of pleasure my spirit do cheer.
About this hymn
As printed As printed: running head «THE CHRISTIAN—HYMNS FOR SOCIAL WORSHIP.»; hymn number «511» (large), tune name «I LOVE THEE. 11s.» centred over the music (condensed capitals), «UNKNOWN.» at the right (capitals and small capitals). Stanza 1 is interlinear, one line per system (two verse lines each), with «1.» before «I»: «1. I love thee, I love thee, I love thee, my Lord; I love thee, my Saviour,I love thee, my God: / I love thee, I love thee, and that thou dost know; But how much I love thee my actions will show.» — no hyphen anywhere («Saviour,» and «actions» stand unbroken under two notes), and no word space is visible after «Saviour,» (a word space is given here). No reference line is printed for this hymn (hymn 424 points to this tune with «[Tune, I Love Thee, No. 511.]», and hymn 462 likewise per the parent). Stanzas 2–4 follow as text in two columns (2–3 left, 4 right), numbered «2» … «4» without a period (numbered «2.» etc. here like the interlinear «1.»), all lines flush left, with «Anon.» in italics after stanza 4. Long lines are wrapped in the print («be my / song ;», «heart and / my tongue.», «bright / King ;», «me to / sing :», «notes / loud and clear,»); they are joined here. The print sets a thin space before «;», «:» and «?» («Lord ;», «God :», «know ;», «rest :», «song ;», «Saviour ?», «King ;», «sing :») and a space after the apostrophe of «I' m» and «I' ll»; they are closed up here. In stanza 4, line 4 the «f» of «of» is a broken sort (only its stem and foot print: «oı»); the word is «of». In stanza 3, line 2 a small blot after «salvation,» (one of several specks in that part of the column, also around «Saviour, with» in line 1) is not a hyphen: «salvation, my». The printer's curly apostrophes are written straight. Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's.
