1

Prayer is the breath of God in man,Returning whence it came;Love is the sacred fire within,And prayer the rising flame.

2

It gives the burdened spirit ease,And soothes the troubled breast;Yields comfort to the mourners here,And to the weary rest.

3

The humble suppliant cannot failTo have his wants supplied,Since He for sinners intercedesWho once for sinners died.

As printed Words only. As printed: hymn number «524» (large) with the reference line «175, 598, 308.» in italics beside it (sing to the tune of hymn 175, 598 or 308); the hymn stands in the lower part of the left column of p. 173, below hymn 523 («William Cowper.»), and ends at the foot of that column with «Benjamin Beddome.» in italics. The first word, «PRAYER», is set in capitals and small capitals. The print sets a thin space before «;» («came ;», «breast ;»); it is closed up here.
