The Christian — Meditation and Prayer

Jesus, who knows full well

  • No. 529
  • Words John Newton.
  • 4 stanzas
  • Words only in the original
1

Jesus, who knows full wellThe heart of every saint,Invites us all our grief to tell;To pray, and never faint.

2

He bows his gracious ear,—We never plead in vain; Then let us wait till he appear,And pray, and pray again.

3

Jesus, the Lord, will hearHis chosen when they cry;Yes, though he may a while forbear,He 'll help them from on high.

4

Then let us earnest cry,And never faint in prayer; He sees, he hears, and, from on high,Will make our cause his care.

About this hymn

As printed Words only. As printed: hymn number «529» (large) with the reference line «558, 732, 266,» in italics beside it — ending with a comma, not a period (sing to the tune of hymn 558, 732 or 266); the hymn opens the right column of p. 174, under the music of hymn 527, and ends there with «John Newton.» in italics. The first word «JESUS» is set in a capital and small capitals. The print sets a thin space before «;» («tell ;», «vain ;»); it is closed up here. «He 'll» (stanza 3) is set with a space before the apostrophe in the print and is kept so. Lines 2 and 4 of each stanza are indented in the print. Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's. No meter is printed (the text is S. M., 6.6.8.6, like the three tunes of the reference line).
