The Christian — Meditation and Prayer

Lord! I cannot let thee go

  • No. 532
  • Words John Newton.
  • 5 stanzas
  • Words only in the original
1

Lord! I cannot let thee go,Till a blessing thou bestow;Do not turn away thy face,Mine 's an urgent, pressing case.

2

Once a sinner, near despair,Sought thy mercy-seat by prayer;Mercy heard and set him free;—Lord! that mercy came to me.

3

Many days have passed since then,Many changes I have seen;Yet have been upheld till now;Who could hold me up but thou?

4

Thou hast helped in every need,This emboldens me to plead; After so much mercy past,Canst thou let me sink at last?

5

No, I must maintain my hold;'T is thy goodness makes me bold;I can no denial take,Since I plead for Jesus' sake.

About this hymn

As printed Words only. As printed: hymn number «532» (large) at the foot of the left column of p. 175, below hymn 531 («John Newton.»), with the reference line «720, 457, 563.» in bold italic figures beside it (sing to the tune of hymn 720, 457 or 563 — read as «683» until 2026-10-19, see uncertainties.md). Five numbered stanzas of four lines: stanzas 1–3 in the left column, stanzas 4–5 at the top of the right column; all lines at the same margin (no indentation); «John Newton.» in italics after stanza 5. The first word «LORD» is set in capitals and small capitals. The print sets a thin space before «!», «;» and «?» («Lord !», «bestow ;», «thou ?»); it is closed up here. «Mine 's» and «'T is» keep the print's spacing of the elision. Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's. No meter is printed (the text is 7s, four lines).
