1

Behold the Christian warrior standIn all the armor of his God;The Spirit's sword is in his hand,His feet are with the Gospel shod.

2

In panoply of truth complete,Salvation's helmet on his head; With righteousness a breast-plate meet,And faith's broad shield before him spread,

3

Undaunted to the field he goes;Yet vain were skill and valor there,Unless, to foil his legion foes,He takes the trustiest weapon, prayer.

4

Thus, strong in his Redeemer's strength,Sin, death, and hell, he tramples down;Fights the good fight, and wins at length,Through mercy, an immortal crown.

About this hymn

As printed As printed: new running head «THE CHRISTIAN—WARFARE AND PILGRIMAGE.»; hymn number «592» (large), tune name «CRASSELIUS. L. M.» centred over the music (condensed display capitals), «CRASSELIUS.» at the right in the composer's place (capitals and small capitals). Stanza 1 is interlinear, between the staves, one verse-line pair per system, with «1.» before «Be-»: system 1 = verse lines 1–2 («Be - hold the Chris-tian war - rior stand In all the ar - mor of his God;»), system 2 = verse lines 3–4. The italic reference line «212, 54, 624.» (= the same words may be sung to the tunes of hymns 212, 54 or 624) stands under the music; stanzas 2–4 follow as text in the left column, numbered «2», «3», «4» (no period; written «2.» … here as in the other deliveries of this book), with «James Montgomery.» in italics after stanza 4. Lines 2 and 4 of each stanza are indented in the print. Stanza 2, line 4 runs over the column width and its last word «spread,» stands alone on the next printed line: joined here as one verse line. A raised spacing dot between «He» and «takes» (stanza 3, line 4: «He·takes») is a type mark, not a hyphen: written «He takes». The print sets a thin space before «;» («head ;», «goes ;», «down ;»); it is closed up here. «Gospel» is capitalized under the staves as printed. Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's.
