⤢ Full screenAm I a soldier of the cross,A follower of the Lamb? And shall I fear to own his cause?Or blush to speak his name?
Must I be carried to the skiesOn flowery beds of ease,Whilst others fought to win the prize,And sailed through bloody seas?
Are there no foes for me to face?Must I not stem the flood? Is this vile world a friend of grace,To help me on to God?
Sure I must fight if I would reign;Increase my courage, Lord;I'll bear the toil, endure the pain,Supported by thy word.
Thy saints in all this glorious warShall conquer, though they die; They see the triumph from afar,With faith's discerning eye.
When that illustrious day shall rise,And all thy armies shineIn robes of victory through the skies,The glory shall be thine.
About this hymn
As printed Words only. As printed: hymn number «599» (large) with the reference line «794, 369. 446.» in italics beside it (sing to the tune of hymn 794, 369 or 446; the second separator is printed as a point, not a comma); stanzas 1–4 at the foot of the left column of p. 195 below hymn 598, stanzas 5–6 at the top of the right column, «Isaac Watts.» in italics at the end. The first word «AM» is set in a capital and small capitals. The print sets a thin space before «?» and «;» («Lamb ?», «cause ?», «reign ;», «Lord ;», «die ;»); it is closed up here. Lines 2 and 4 of each stanza are indented in the print. Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's. No meter is printed (the text is C. M., 8.6.8.6, like the three tunes of the reference line).
