⤢ Full screenSleep not, soldier of the cross;Foes are lurking all around:Look not here to find repose; This is but thy battle ground.
Up, and take thy shield and sword;Up, it is the call of Heaven;Shrink not faithless from thy Lord,Nobly strive as he hath striven.
Break through all the force of ill,Tread the might of passion down,Struggle onward, onward still,To the conquering Saviour's crown.
Through the midst of toil and pain,Let this thought ne'er leave thy breast,—Every triumph thou dost gainMakes more sweet thy coming rest.
About this hymn
As printed As printed: running head «THE CHRISTIAN—WARFARE AND PILGRIMAGE.»; hymn number «605» (large, left), tune name «ROOT. 7s.» centred over the music, «F. E. BELDEN.» at the right (capitals and small capitals); in the left margin, printed vertically, «by F. E. Belden.» beside system 1 and «Copyrighted 1886.» beside system 2 (= «Copyrighted 1886 by F. E. Belden.»; the last figure of the year read from the native pixels, see `uncertainties.md`). Stanza 1 is set between the staves, one text line (two verse lines) per system, with «1.» before «Sleep»; «sol - dier», «lurk - ing», «a - round», «re - pose», «bat - tle» are printed in syllables and joined here. Stanzas 2–4 are printed as text in the left column below the music, under the italic reference line «904, 272, 826.» (= the words may also be sung to the tunes of hymns 904, 272 or 826); «Anon.» in italics after stanza 4. The stanza numbers of the text stanzas are printed without a full stop («2 Up,»); they are numbered «2.» here like stanza 1. Lines 2 and 4 of each text stanza are indented in the print. Stanza 4, line 2 is set tight («Let this thought ne'er leave thy breast,—», with hair spaces only) and is written with ordinary spaces. The printer's thin space before «;» («sword ;», «Heaven ;») is closed up here. «Saviour's», «Heaven» and the dash of «breast,—» are the print's.
