1

One precious boon, O Lord, I seek,While tossed upon life's billowy sea;To hear a voice within me speak,"Thy Saviour is well pleased with thee."

2

Earth's scoffs and scorn well pleased I'll bear,Nor mourn though under foot I'm trod,If day by day I may but shareThine approbation, O my God!

3

The friends I love may turn from me,Their words unkind may pierce me through;But this my daily prayer shall be,"Forgive; they know not what they do."

4

Let me but know, where'er I roam,That I am doing Jesus' will;And though I've neither friends nor home,My heart shall glow with gladness still.

5

To that bright, blest, immortal morn,By holy prophets long foretold,My eager, longing eyes I turn,And soon its glories shall behold.

6

Then all the scoffs and scorn I've borneFor His dear sake who died for me,To everlasting joys will turn,In glorious immortality;

About this hymn

As printed As printed: running head «THE CHRISTIAN—GODLY LIFE.» (first page of the section); hymn number «624» (large), tune name «UXBRIDGE. L. M.» centred over the music (bold sans capitals), «LOWELL MASON:» at the right (capitals and small capitals, ending with a colon where the book elsewhere has a period — kept as printed, see uncertainties.md). Stanza 1 is interlinear, between the staves, two verse lines per system, with «1.» before «One»; the print sets «up - on», «with - in», «Sav - iour», with «precious» and «billowy» each printed as one word under two notes, and «tossedup» and «wellpleasedwith» set very tight. Stanzas 2–6 are printed as text in the left column below the music, under the reference line «514, 47, 347.» in bold italics (= may also be sung to the tunes of hymns 514, 47 or 347), numbered «2»–«6» without periods (written «2.»–«6.» here, as in the other deliveries of this book); lines 2 and 4 of each stanza are indented. Two first lines too long for the column are broken in the print and joined here: «Earth's scoffs and scorn well pleased I'll / bear,» (stanza 2) and «Their words unkind may pierce me / through;» (stanza 3). «Charles Fitch.» in italics after stanza 6; in this exemplar a reader has drawn a wavy stroke of ink under the name (not part of the print). The print sets a thin space before «;» and «!» («through ;», «will ;», «God !»); it is closed up here. Stanza 6 ends with a semicolon («immortality;») as printed. Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's.
