⤢ Full screenSo let our lips and lives expressThe holy gospel we profess; So let our works and virtues shine,To prove the doctrine all divine.
Thus shall we best proclaim abroadThe honors of our gracious Lord,When his salvation reigns within,And grace subdues the power of sin.
Our flesh and sense must be denied,Passion and envy, lust and pride; While justice, temperance, truth, and love,Our inward piety approve.
Religion bears our spirits up,While we expect that blessed hope,The bright appearing of the Lord; And Faith stands leaning on his word.
About this hymn
As printed Words only. As printed: hymn number «628» (large) at the foot of the left column of p. 206, under «Philip Doddridge.» of hymn 627, with the italic reference line «787, 932, 104.» (= sing to the tunes of hymns 787, 932 or 104) beside the number; stanzas 1–3 in the left column and stanza 4 at the top of the right column, numbered «1» … «4» (no period; written «1.» … here as in the other deliveries of this book); «Isaac Watts.» in italics after stanza 4. Unlike the other hymns of the page, the lines of this hymn are NOT indented (all four lines of every stanza start at the same place); written here with the usual indentation of lines 2 and 4. The first word «SO» appears to be set in capitals and small capitals (the O a little taller than the lowercase o of «our»); written in ordinary type here. «Faith» is capitalized in stanza 4 as printed («Faith stands» is set close). The print sets a thin space before «;» («profess ;», «pride ;», «Lord ;»); it is closed up here. No meter is printed (the text is L. M., like the tunes referred to). Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's.
