Walk in the light! and thou shalt ownThy darkness passed away;Because that light on thee hath shoneIn which is perfect day.
Walk in the light! and e'en the tombNo fearful shade shall wear;Glory shall chase away its gloom,For Christ hath conquered there.
Walk in the light! and thine shall beA path, though thorny, bright; For God, by grace, shall dwell in thee,And God himself is light.
About this hymn
As printed As printed: running head «THE CHRISTIAN—GODLY LIFE.»; hymn number «635» (large), tune name «CHOPIN. C. M.» centred over the music (condensed capitals), «ISAAC B. WOODBURY.» at the right (capitals and small capitals). Stanza 1 is interlinear, between the staves, one line per system, with «1.» before «Walk»: «1. Walk in the light! so shalt thou know That fel - lowship of love His Spir - it» / «on - ly can be-stow Who reigns in light a -bove, Who reigns in light a - bove.» The music sings the fourth line twice, printed out in full under the staves — the stanza below gives the four verse lines once, as a poem, with the final reading «above.» (under the music the line ends first with «a -bove,» and in the repeat with «a - bove.»). Under the staves «fellowship» is printed «fel - lowship» (one hyphen); «shalt thou know» and «Who reigns in» are set with almost closed word spaces. The italic reference line «179, 581, 724.» (= the same words may be sung to the tunes of hymns 179, 581 or 724) stands under the music; stanzas 2–4 follow as text in the left column, numbered «2»–«4» without periods (written «2.»–«4.» here, as in the other deliveries of this book), with «Bernard Barton.» in italics after stanza 4. In stanzas 2–4 the second and fourth lines of each stanza are indented in the print. The print sets a thin space before «!» and «;» («light !», «away ;», «wear ;», «bright ;»); it is closed up here. The apostrophe of «e'en» is written straight. Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's.
