Words

'Tis by the faith of joys to comeWe walk through deserts dark as night;Till we arrive at heaven, our home,Truth is our guide, and faith our light.

The want of sight she well supplies; She makes the pearly gates appear;Far into distant worlds she pries,And brings eternal glories near.

Though lions roar, and tempests blow,And rocks and dangers fill the way,With joy we tread the desert through,While faith inspires a heavenly ray.

About this hymn

As printed As printed: running head «THE CHRISTIAN—FAITH, HOPE, AND CHARITY.»; hymn number «662» (large), tune name «LOUVAN. L. M.» centred over the music (condensed capitals; the display face's full stops look like commas), «VIRGIL C. TAYLOR.» at the right (capitals and small capitals). Stanza 1 is interlinear, one verse line per half system, with «1.» before «'Tis» («des-erts» and «ar - rive» hyphenated under their notes; the compositor set «to come», «at heaven», «our home» and «Truth is» without a visible space — they are separate words). The italic reference line «223, 347, 514.» (= the same words may be sung to the tunes of hymns 223, 347 or 514) stands under the music; stanzas 2–3 follow as text in the left column, numbered «2»–«3» without a full stop (written «2.»–«3.» here), the second and fourth lines of each stanza indented (kept here; stanza 1, interlinear in the print, is laid out the same way), with «Isaac Watts.» in italics after stanza 3. Apostrophes are written straight («'Tis»); the print's thin space before «;» is closed up. Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's.
