The Christian — Comfort and Encouragement

O thou who driest the mourner's tear

  • No. 705
  • Words Thomas Moore.
  • 3 stanzas
  • Words only in the original
1

O thou who driest the mourner's tear! How dark this world would beIf, when deceived and wounded here,We could not fly to thee!

2

O, who would bear life's stormy doom,Did not thy wing of loveCome, brightly wafting through the gloomOur peace-branch from above?

3

Each sorrow, touched by thee, grows brightWith more than rapture's ray,As darkness shows us worlds of lightWe never saw by day.

About this hymn

As printed Words only. As printed: hymn number «705» (large) with the reference line «546, 147, 204.» in italics beside it (sing to the tune of hymn 546, 147 or 204), in the right column of p. 229 under hymn 704; «Thomas Moore.» in italics after stanza 3. The first words are set «O THOU», the «O» as a full capital and «THOU» in small capitals; written in ordinary type here. The stanza numbers are printed without a period («1» … «3»); written «1.» … here as in the other deliveries of this book. The print sets a thin space before «!» and «?» («tear !», «thee !», «above ?»); it is closed up here, and the apostrophes («mourner's», «life's», «rapture's») are written straight. Lines 2 and 4 of each stanza are indented in the print. No meter is printed (the text is C. M., 8.6.8.6, like the referenced tunes). Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's.
