Why that look of sadness?Why that downcast eye?Can no thought of gladnessLift thy soul on high?

O thou heir of heaven,Think of Jesus' love,While to thee is givenAll his grace to prove.

Is thy burdened spiritAgonized for sin?Think of Jesus' merit;He can make thee clean;

Think of Calvary's mountain,Where his blood was spilt;In that precious fountainWash away thy guilt.

Set the prize before thee;Gird thy armor on:Heir of grace and glory,Struggle for thy crown.

About this hymn

As printed As printed: running head «THE CHRISTIAN—COMFORT AND ENCOURAGEMENT.»; hymn number «711» (large, left), tune name «COMFORT. 6s & 5s.» centred over the music (condensed capitals), «ORAZ.» at the right (capitals and small capitals). No reference line is printed. Stanza 1 is interlinear, between the staves of the single system, as one running line in condensed bold type with «1.» before «Why»: «Why that look of sad-ness? Why that downcast eye? Can no thought of gladness Lift thy soul on high?». Stanzas 2–5 are printed as four-line text in the left column below the music, followed by «Anon.» in italics; hymn 712 fills the right column. The stanza numbers of the text stanzas are printed without a full stop («2 O thou»); they are numbered «2.»–«5.» here like stanza 1. Lines 2 and 4 of each stanza are indented in the print. The printer's thin space before «?», «;» and «:» («sad-ness ?», «sin ?», «merit ;», «on :») is closed up here; the apostrophes are written straight («Jesus'», «Calvary's»). Spelling («armor»), punctuation and capitals are the print's.
