⤢ Full screenI ask not, Lord, for less to bearHere in the narrow way,But that I may thy blessing shareIn all I do or say.
Through whatsoe'er my path shall lie,With patience may I run; With filial trust my heart reply,"Thy will, O God, be done."
With thee to lead, I will not fearIn scenes with dangers rife,While still thy cheering voice I hear,"I am the Way, the Life."
Thou art the refuge of my soul,My hope when comforts flee,My strength while life's rough billows roll,My joy eternally.
Then help me to improve with care,These precious moments given; For they a faithful record bear,Of good or ill, to Heaven.
And in thine arms of love enfoldMe from the tempter's snare; And in the book of life enrolled,Be my name written there.
About this hymn
As printed As printed: running head «THE CHRISTIAN—TRUST AND RESIGNATION.»; hymn number «724» (large), tune name «HERBERT. C. M.» centred over the music (condensed capitals and small capitals), «LOWELL MASON.» at the right (capitals and small capitals). Stanza 1 is interlinear, between the staves, one line per system, with «1.» before «I»: «1. I ask not, Lord, for less to bear Here in the nar - row way, But» / «that I may thy blessing share In all I do or say, In all I do or say.»; under the staves only «nar - row» is hyphenated, while «blessing» is printed as an unbroken word under two notes. The music sings the last line twice, printed out in full under the second system — the stanza below gives the four verse lines once, as a poem, with the final reading «say.» (under the music the line ends first with «say,» and in the repeat with «say.»). Stanzas 2–6 are printed as text in the left column below the music, under the reference line «354, 70, 399.» in italic figures (= the words may also be sung to the tunes of hymns 354, 70 or 399), numbered «2»–«6» without periods (written «2.»–«6.» here, as in the other deliveries of this book), followed by «Annie R. Smith.» in italics. The print sets a thin space before «;» («run ;», «given ;», «snare ;»); it is closed up here. Quotation marks and apostrophes are written straight («whatsoe'er», «life's», «tempter's», "Thy will, O God, be done."). Lines 2 and 4 of each stanza are indented in the print. Spelling («Heaven» with a capital), punctuation and capitals are the print's.
