1

If, through unruffled seas,Calmly toward heaven we sail,With grateful hearts, O God, to thee,We'll own the favoring gale.

2

But should the surges rise,And rest delay to come,Blest be the sorrow, kind the storm,Which drives us nearer home.

3

Soon shall our doubts and fearsAll yield to thy control;Thy tender mercies shall illumeThe midnight of the soul.

4

Teach us in every state,To make thy will our own,And when the joys of sense depart,To live by faith alone.

About this hymn

As printed As printed: running head «THE CHRISTIAN—TRUST AND RESIGNATION.» (top of p. 239); hymn number «736» (large), tune name «SELVIN. S. M.» centred over the music (capitals and small capitals), «GERMAN, ARR. BY LOWELL MASON.» at the right (capitals and small capitals). Stanza 1 is interlinear, between the staves, one line per system, with «1.» before «If,»: «1. If, through un - ruf- fled seas, Calm - ly toward heaven we sail, With grate-ful hearts, O God, to thee,» / «We'll own the favoring gale, With grate-ful hearts, O God, to thee, We'll own the favoring gale.» The music sings the third and fourth lines twice, printed out in full under the staves — the stanza below gives the four verse lines once, as a poem, with the final reading «gale.» (under the music the fourth line ends first with «gale,» and in the repeat with «gale.»). Under the staves «favoring» is printed whole under two notes each time. Stanzas 2–4 are printed as text in the left column below the music, under the reference line «89, 558, 732.» in italic figures (= the words may also be sung to the tunes of hymns 89, 558 or 732), numbered «2»–«4» without periods (written «2.»–«4.» here, as in the other deliveries of this book), followed by «Augustus M. Toplady.» in italics; lines 2 and 4 of each stanza are indented. The print sets a thin space before «;» («control ;»); it is closed up here. Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's.
