⤢ Full screenHoly Spirit, faithful Guide,Ever near the Christian's side;Gently lead us by the hand,Pilgrims in a desert land;Weary souls for e'er rejoice,When they hear that sweetest voice.Whisper softly, "Wanderer, come!Follow me, I'll guide thee home."
Ever present, truest friend,Ever near thine aid to lend,Leave us not to doubt and fear,Groping on in darkness drear; When the storms are raging sore,Hearts grow faint, and hopes give o'er,Whisper softly, "Wanderer come!Follow me, I'll guide thee home!"
When our days of toil shall cease,Waiting still for sweet release,Nothing left but heaven and prayer,Wondering if our names are there;Wading deep the dismal flood,Pleading nought but Jesus' blood,Whisper softly, "Wanderer come!Follow me, I'll guide thee home!"
About this hymn
As printed As printed: running head «THE CHRISTIAN—GUIDANCE AND PROTECTION.»; hymn number «778» (large), tune name «GUIDE. 7s. D.» centred over the music (condensed capitals; the «D.» smaller), «M. M. WELLS.» at the right (capitals and small capitals); «Fine.» over the end of system 1 and «D. C.» over the end of system 2. Stanza 1 is interlinear: between the staves of system 1, in braces with «1.» before them, «Ho - ly Spir - it, faith - ful Guide, Ev - er near the Chris - tian's side;» (first time) and «Gent - ly lead us by the hand, Pil - grims in a des - ert land;» (the repeat); under the bass staff of system 1, in italics, «D. C.—Whis-per soft - ly, "Wanderer, come! Fol - low me, I'll guide thee home."» (sung on system 1 after the D. C.); between the staves of system 2 «Wea - ry souls for e'er re - joice, When they hear that sweet - est voice.». Stanza 1 is assembled here in the order sung (lines 1–2, 3–4, 5–6 of system 2, 7–8 of the D. C. line); syllables are joined into whole words. The D. C. line has a comma after «Wanderer» in stanza 1 («"Wanderer, come!») and none in stanzas 2–3 («"Wanderer come!»), as printed. Stanzas 2–3 follow as text in two columns, numbered «2», «3» without a period (numbered «2.», «3.» here like stanza 1). «M. M. Wells.» in italics after stanza 3. An ink annotation «SH 211» in the margin above the number (former owner) is not printed and not transcribed. The print sets a thin space before «;» and «!» and after the opening quotation marks («drear ;», «home !"», «" Wanderer»), and «I' ll» in stanza 3; they are closed up here. Straight quotation marks and apostrophes. Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's.
