The Lord is our Shepherd, our Guardian and Guide

  • No. 784
  • Words Anon.
  • 3 stanzas
  • Words only in the original
1

The Lord is our Shepherd, our Guardian and Guide;Whatever we want he will kindly provide:To the sheep of his pasture his mercies abound; His care and protection his flock will surround.

2

The Lord is our Shepherd; what then shall we fear? What evil can trouble us while he is near? Not if we are summoned to walk through the valeOf the shadow of death, shall our hearts ever fail.

3

The Lord is become our salvation and song; His blessings have followed us all our life long! His name will we praise while we have any breath,Be cheerful in life, or be happy in death.

About this hymn

As printed Words only. As printed: hymn number «784» (large) at the top of the right column of p. 257, below the music of hymn 783, with the reference line «781, 511.» in italics (= sung to the tunes of hymns 781 or 511); three stanzas of four long verses, «Anon.» in italics after stanza 3. The first word «THE» is set in capitals and small capitals; written in ordinary type here. The stanza numbers are printed without a full stop («1 THE», «2 The», «3 The»); they are numbered «1.»–«3.» here as in the other deliveries of this book. The long verses are broken by the narrow column («our Guardian / and Guide;», «kindly pro- / vide:», «his mercies / abound;», «will sur- / round.», «what then / shall we fear?», «walk through / the vale», «our hearts / ever fail.», «salvation and / song;», «our life / long!», «we have / any breath,»); they are joined here, one verse per line, «provide» and «surround» written whole. The printer's thin space before «;», «:», «?» and «!» («Guide ;», «vide :», «abound ;», «Shepherd ;», «fear ?», «song ;», «long !») is closed up here. Line 3 of stanza 2 ends without punctuation («the vale»), as printed. No meter is printed (the text is 11s, the meter of the referenced tunes 781 GOSHEN and 511 I LOVE THEE, and of PORTUGUESE HYMN on the same page). Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's.
