⤢ Full screenBrother pilgrim, be not weary;Tune your harp for heaven and home,Where the heart is never dreary,And where tears shall never come:Don your armor, be not sleeping; One short hour, and 't will be past; One brief hour of toil and weeping,Then comes heaven and home at last.
Let your eyes to heaven be turning,—Darkened sun and falling stars,—See the crimson heavens burning,Earth prepared for final wars;Hear the scoffer ask with jeering,"Where's the sign that he is nigh?"—Turn your eyes with joy and fearingTo the omens in the sky.
Signs in nature oft have told usOf the saints' glad jubilee;Soon shall azure skies enfold us,And upon the jasper seaWe shall stand in robes of whiteness,Praising him upon the throne,And in heaven's eternal brightnessWe shall know as we are known.
About this hymn
As printed Words only. As printed: hymn number «830» (large) in the right column of p. 272, under the end of hymn 829, then in italics and brackets «[Tune, Dawning, No. 842.]» (sing to the tune DAWNING, hymn 842), then «8s & 7s.» in bold and «D.» in small capitals. Three numbered stanzas of eight lines fill the rest of the right column, «L. D. Santee.» in italics, right-aligned, at the end. Stanzas numbered «1»–«3» without periods (written «1.»–«3.» here, as in the other deliveries of this book); even lines indented. The first word «BROTHER» is set as a capital B and small capitals; written «Brother». The print sets a thin space before «;», «:» and «?» and inside the quotation marks («" Where's … nigh ? "»); it is closed up here. The em dash after the closing quotation mark of stanza 2, line 6 is printed broken and light («"—» read as an em dash, like «turning,—» and «stars,—» above it). Curly quotation marks and apostrophes are written straight («'t will», «Where's», «saints'», «heaven's»). Spelling («armor»), punctuation and capitals are the print's.
