⤢ Full screenPilgrims, on! the day is dawning;Strike your tents, and homeward haste:Sleep not while the blush of morningCalls you on the desert waste.Though the way be dark and dreary,Life's sharp anguish must be borne;Courage, then ye faint and weary,Linger not to weep and mourn.
Pilgrims, on! the storm is beating,Beating wildly on your way:Tarry not, the time is fleeting;Shall the storm your footsteps stay?Hasten on, through joy and sorrow,Or whatever may betide,Wait not for the calm to-morrow,Faithful at your work abide.
Pilgrims, on! what though in dangers,Life's eventful course pursue;Labor on, ye friendless strangers,Grace will guide you safely through. What if trials must befall you! What if fierce temptations rise!Shall earth's bitter strife appall youWhile contending for the prize?
Pilgrims, on! there 's rest in heaven,Rest from every anxious care,Rest in Jesus' smiles, forgiven,Peaceful and eternal there,O, 't were sweet to toil in sadness,O, 't were well the cross to bear,If, at last in joy and gladness,We may rest forever there!
About this hymn
As printed As printed: running head «WAITING FOR CHRIST—CLOSING WORK.»; hymn number «848» (large), tune name «ONWARD. 8s & 7s. D.» centred over the music (condensed display capitals; «D.» in small capitals), «UNKNOWN.» at the right in the composer slot (capitals and small capitals). Stanza 1 is interlinear, between the staves, one line per system, with «1.» before «Pilgrims,»: «1. Pilgrims, on! the day is dawning; Strike your tents, and homeward haste: Sleep not while the blush of» / «morn - ing Calls you on the des - ert waste. Though the way be dark and drear - y,» / «Life's sharp an - guish must be borne; Courage, then ye faint and wea - ry, Lin - ger not to weep and mourn.» («Pilgrims», «dawning», «homeward», «Courage» are printed whole under their two notes). The reference line «844, 466.» in italic figures stands over stanza 2 (sing also to the tunes of hymns 844 and 466). Stanzas 2–4 are printed as text in the left column below the music, numbered «2»–«4» without periods (written «2.»–«4.» here, as in the other deliveries of this book); stanza 4 continues at the top of the right column with its lines 5–8, followed by «Anon.» in italics, right-aligned. Lines 2, 4, 6 and 8 of each stanza are indented. The print sets a thin space before «!», «;», «:» and «?» («on !», «dawning ;», «haste :», «way :», «stay ?», «there !»); it is closed up here. «there 's» (stanza 4) is printed with a space before the apostrophe, kept as in the other deliveries («There 's», «We 'll»); the curly apostrophes of «Life's», «earth's», «Jesus'», «'t were» are written straight. Spelling («Labor», «appall», «to-morrow»), punctuation and capitals are the print's.
