1

Light of those whose dreary dwellingBorders on the shades of death,Come, and by thyself revealingDissipate the clouds beneath.Thou, new heaven and earth's Creator,In our deepest darkness rise;Scattering all the night of nature,Pouring day upon our eyes.

2

Still we wait for thy appearing;Life and joy thy beams impart,Chasing all our fears, and cheeringEvery poor benighted heart.Come, extend thy wonted favorTo our ruined, guilty race;Come, thou blest, exalted Saviour!Come, apply thy saving grace.

3

By thine all-atoning meritEvery burdened soul release;By the teachings of thy SpiritGuide us into perfect peace; So shall we, at thine appearing,Wait thy smiling face to see;So, the joyful summons hearing,Enter into rest with thee.

About this hymn

As printed As printed: running head «WAITING FOR CHRIST—CLOSING WORK.»; hymn number «850» (large), tune name «LOVE DIVINE. 8s & 7s. D.» centred over the music (condensed display capitals; «D.» in small capitals), «JOHN ZUNDEL.» at the right (capitals and small capitals). Stanza 1 is interlinear, between the staves, one line per system, with «1.» before «Light»: system 1 = verse lines 1–3, system 2 = lines 4–6; lines 7–8 are printed in italics as a second line, «D. S.—Scattering all the night of nature,» under the last two bars of system 1 and «Pouring day up-on our eyes.» under the first two bars of system 2, and are sung there after the «D. S.» at the end of the music (back to the segno, end at «Fine.»). Stanza 1 below is assembled in the order sung. «dreary», «Scattering» and «Pouring» are printed whole under their two notes. The reference line «844, 501, 503.» in italic figures stands over stanza 2 (the words may also be sung to the tunes of hymns 844, 501 or 503). Stanzas 2–3 are printed as text, stanza 2 in the left column, stanza 3 in the right, numbered «2», «3» without periods (written «2.», «3.» here, as in the other deliveries of this book), followed by «Charles Wesley.» in italics, right-aligned. Lines 2, 4, 6 and 8 of each stanza are indented. The print sets a thin space before «;» and «!» («appearing ;», «race ;», «Saviour !», «release ;», «peace ;», «see ;», «rise ;»); it is closed up here. The curly apostrophe of «earth's» is written straight. Spelling («Saviour», «favor»), punctuation and capitals are the print's.
