1

Day of Judgment, day of wonders!Hark! the trumpet's awful sound,Louder than a thousand thunders,Shakes the vast creation round! How the summons, How the summonsWill the sinner's heart confound!

2

See the Lord in glory nearing,Clothed in majesty divine! You who long for his appearing,Then shall say, "This God is mine!"Gracious Saviour,Own me in that day as thine!

3

At his call the dead awaken,Rise to life from earth and sea!All the powers of nature shakenBy his looks prepare to flee.Careless sinner,What will then become of thee?

4

But to those who have confessèd,Loved and served the Lord below,He will say, "Come near ye blessèd,See the kingdom I bestow; You foreverShall my love and glory know."

About this hymn

As printed As printed: running head «SECOND ADVENT—EXECUTIVE JUDGMENT.»; hymn number «903» (large), tune name «NEANDER. 8s & 7s. 6L.» centred over the music (condensed capitals and small capitals; the «s» after 8 and 7 and the «L» after 6 are small capitals), «JOACHIM NEANDER.» at the right (capitals and small capitals). Stanza 1 is interlinear: its first four lines stand under system 1 as two lines in braces after «1.» («{ Day of Judg-ment, day of won-ders! Hark! the trum-pet's aw - ful sound, / Loud - er than a thou - sand thun-ders, Shakesthe vast cre - a - tion round! }»), sung on the first and the second time through system 1, which ends with a repeat sign; lines 5–6 stand under system 2 («How the sum-mons, How the summons Will the sin - ner's heart confound!» — the short fifth line is sung twice). Stanzas 2–4 are printed as text below the music, under the reference line «905, 772.» in bold italics (= the words may also be sung to the tunes of hymns 905 or 772): stanza 2 and the first three lines of stanza 3 in the left column, the rest of stanza 3 and stanza 4 in the right column; «John Newton.» in italics after stanza 4. In the text stanzas lines 2, 4 and 6 are indented and line 5 («Gracious Saviour,», «Careless sinner,», «You forever») more; stanza 1 is set here in the same pattern, its fifth line («How the summons, How the summons») as printed under the staves (as in the delivery of hymn 772, same meter). «Shakesthe» (interlinear line 2) is printed without the word space — a spacing accident, written «Shakes the». «Rise tc lite» (stanza 3, line 2) has two broken letters on the plate — read «Rise to life». «confessèd» and «blessèd» (stanza 4) carry a grave accent in the print and are kept so. The print sets a thin space before «!», «?» and «;» and inside the quotation marks («divine !», «" This God is mine !"», «thee ?», «bestow ;», «" Come near»); it is closed up here, and the curly quotation marks are written straight. Spelling («Saviour»), punctuation and capitals («Judgment») are the print's.
