1

Great God, what do I see and hear! The end of things created! The Judge of man I see appearOn clouds of glory seated:The trumpet sounds; the graves restoreThe dead which they contained before;Prepare, my soul, to meet him.

2

The dead in Christ shall first arise,At the last trumpet's sounding,—Caught up to meet him in the skies,With joy their Lord surrounding; No gloomy fears their souls dismay,His presence sheds eternal dayOn those prepared to meet him.

3

But sinners filled with guilty fears,Behold his wrath prevailing; For they shall rise, and find their tearsAnd sighs are unavailing:The day of grace is past and gone;Trembling they stand before the throne,All unprepared to meet him.

4

Great God! what do I see and hear! The end of things created! The Judge of man I see appearOn clouds of glory seated:Beneath his cross I view the dayWhen heaven and earth shall pass away,And thus prepare to meet him.

About this hymn

As printed As printed: running head «SECOND ADVENT—EXECUTIVE JUDGMENT.»; hymn number «910» (large), tune name «JUDGMENT. P. M.» centred over the music (condensed capitals and small capitals), «JOSEPH KLUG.» at the right (capitals and small capitals); no reference line. Stanza 1 is interlinear, between the staves, one line per system, with «1.» before a brace: its first four lines are printed as two lines one above the other in braces, «{ Great God, what do I see and hear! The end of things cre - a - ted! / The Judge of man I see ap - pear On clouds of glory seat - ed: }», under the first strain of the music, which ends with a repeat sign (first and second time); the remaining three lines follow on one line («The trumpet sounds; the» / «graves re - store The dead which they contained before; Prepare, my soul, to meet him.»). «glory», «trumpet», «contained», «before» and «Prepare» are printed unbroken under two notes. Stanzas 2–4 are printed as text in the left column below the music, numbered «2»–«4» without periods (written «2.»–«4.» here, as in the other deliveries of this book); lines 2, 4 and 7 are indented. «William B. Collyer.» in italics after stanza 4. The print sets a thin space before «!», «;» and «:» («hear !», «sounds ;», «surrounding ;», «unavailing :», «seated :»); it is closed up here. The printer's curly apostrophe is written straight («trumpet's»). Stanza 1 (interlinear) has «Great God, what do I see and hear!» with a comma, stanza 4 (text) «Great God! what do I see and hear!» with an exclamation mark, and stanza 1 line 4 ends «seated:» — each as printed. Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's.
