1

When downward to the darksome tombI thoughtful turn my eyes,Frail nature trembles at the gloom,And anxious fears arise.

2

Why shrinks my soul? In death's embraceOnce Jesus captive slept; And angels, hovering o'er the place,His lowly pillow kept.

3

Thus shall they guard my sleeping dust,And as the Saviour rose,The grave again shall yield her trust,And end my deep repose.

4

My Lord, before to glory gone,Shall bid me come away,And calm and bright shall break the dawnOf heaven's eternal day.

5

Then let my faith each fear dispel,And gild with light the grave; To him my loftiest praises swell,Who died from death to save.

About this hymn

As printed As printed: running head «DEATH AND RESURRECTION.»; hymn number «944» (large), tune name «SPOHR. C. M.» centred over the music (condensed capitals and small capitals), «SPOHR.» at the right in the composer slot (capitals and small capitals). Stanza 1 is interlinear, between the staves, one line per system, with «1.» before «When»: «1. When down-ward to the darksome tomb I thought-ful turn my eyes,» under system 1 and «Frail na - ture trem - bles at the gloom, And anx - ious fears a - rise.» under system 2 («darksome» is printed as one word under its two notes). The reference line «933, 941.» in italic figures stands centred over stanza 2 (sing also to the tunes of hymns 933 and 941). Stanzas 2–5 are printed as text in two columns below the music, numbered «2»–«5» without periods (written «2.»–«5.» here, as in the other deliveries of this book); lines 2 and 4 are indented. «Ray Palmer.» in italics after stanza 5. The print sets a thin space before «?» and «;» («soul ?», «slept ;», «grave ;»); it is closed up here. The apostrophes («death's», «o'er», «heaven's») are written straight. Spelling («Saviour», «hovering»), punctuation and capitals are the print's.
