1

Friend after friend departs:Who hath not lost a friend? There is no union here of heartsThat finds not here an end:Were this frail world our only rest,Living or dying, none were blest.

2

Beyond the flight of time,Beyond this vale of death,There surely is some blessed climeWhere life is not a breath,Nor life's affection transient fireWhose sparks fly upward to expire.

3

There is a world above,Where parting is unknown;A whole eternity of loveFormed for the good alone:O Saviour, hasten to appear!Translate us to that happy sphere.

About this hymn

As printed As printed: running head «DEATH AND RESURRECTION.»; hymn number «957» (large), tune name «REQUIEM. P. M.» centred over the music (condensed capitals), «F. E. BELDEN.» at the right (capitals and small capitals). No reference line (the hymn has its own tune). Stanza 1 is interlinear, between the staves, one line per system, with «1.» before «Friend»; under the staves only «un - ion» is hyphenated, the other words are printed whole («after», «departs», «only», «Living», «dying»), and the print closes up several words («Friendafterfriend», «lostafriend», «Thereisno», «nonewereblest»). Stanzas 2–3 are printed as text in two columns below the music; lines 2 and 4 of each stanza are indented, lines 1, 3, 5 and 6 are not. «James Montgomery.» in italics after stanza 3. The print sets a thin space before «:», «?», «;» and «!» («departs :», «friend ?», «end :», «unknown ;», «alone :», «appear !»); it is closed up here. The printer's curly apostrophe is written straight («life's»). The text stanzas are numbered «2», «3» without a period in the print; they are written «2.», «3.» here, as in the other deliveries of this book. In stanza 2 «is not a» is printed heavier (ink), not in another type. Spelling («Saviour»), punctuation and capitals are the print's.
